Lesson 4
God Of Grace And Judgment
Romans 6: 14
For sin shall not have dominion over you. You are not under the
law but under grace.
Definition of Grace: Unmerited favor - which means we don’t
deserve it
But is that really all it is? Did God just give us favor? Or was there
more to it?
You can be in favor of something and never get involved and do
anything about it. A ruler could be in favor of getting rid of taxes, (wouldn’t that a
miracle?) but if he doesn’t do anything about it, it doesn’t matter. He could say all day,
"I think taxes are wrong, someone should do away with them!" Will they go
away? No! He has the power to do something about it, but if he does not act, there will
always be taxes. But once he is willing to be involved and do something, like pass a law,
the taxes will be gone.
Well God could have sat up in heaven and said "It sure would
be good if those people didn’t have to go to hell. I am sure in favor of that!" But if
He hadn’t
been willing to get involved on our behalf, we would all still be
going to hell.
But He did get involved. He sent Jesus and as long as we accept
Him we won’t go to hell.
So Grace is God’s unmerited favor "and" His
willingness to get involved on our behalf.
John 1:14-17
And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His
glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.....And of His
fullness we have all received and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses,
but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:19-28
V24 Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that
is in Christ Jesus
In the Old Testament, the people had to live by the letter of the law
because no sacrifice for sin had been made. But when Jesus died and rose again, we had
grace. But we need to accept it. It is a precious gift.
Romans 11:5&6
V6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works, otherwise grace is
no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace, otherwise work is no longer
work.
Some religions teach that you have to work your way to heaven.
That if you are good enough you will make it. Well by yourself, you will never be good
enough. But with God’s grace, we will make it.
Romans 5:14-21
V17 For if by one man’s offense death reigned through the one,
much more those who receive abundance of grace and or the gift of righteousness will
reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.
V20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But
where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.
V21So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign
through the righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
One man caused sin to reign over us, that was Adam. One man
gave us dominion over sin, that man was Jesus.
Ephesians 1:6-8
V7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness
of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
We have an abundance of Grace because of Jesus. By accepting
Him you become righteous in God’s eyes. Whenever you sin, you just need to ask for
forgiveness and grace steps in.
I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Ephesians 2:1-10
V8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. and that not of
yourselves, it is the gift of God.
It is important for you to understand that by yourself you can do
nothing. You are like a dead man. You can’t save yourself, you can’t save others, or go
to heaven. But when we accept Jesus, we become alive. God makes us His children and
we become his workmanship. He makes us and molds us to become just like Jesus. By
faith we are sitting right beside the throne with Jesus.
I Peter 4:10
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good
stewards of the manifold grace of God.
This is a free gift. What do you do with a gift for someone else?
You give it to them. You must give the gift of God’s grace away so others can accept it
too.
Tell people about Jesus. Let them accept God’s grace too.
What happens if you don’t receive this gift of God? Instead of
grace, you will receive His judgment
Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed on to man to die once, but after that, the
judgment
All of us have to die someday and if we haven’t accepted Jesus,
there will be judgment. Do not decide to reject God’s grace. (Galations 2:20-21)
As much as God has love and mercy and grace, His judgment and
wrath are just as powerful, on someone that rejects His gracious gift of salvation. There
will be no mercy or love on judgment day (Romans 1:18-20)
God’s judgment says we deserve to go to Hell, but than God His
Grace says we don’t. Do not set aside His grace. Accept it, it is the only way to
heaven.
I once read a story in a book. It was about a man on the edge of the
hell. God’s judgment was crying out, he must go! Then Grace stepped in and revealed a
scene. It was of Jesus dying on the cross. Grace showed that the price had been paid for
this man, and he had accepted it. God then said, let him go. Enter into the kingdom of
heaven.
We indeed have a great God.
His grace is more than enough!
He is worthy to be praised and worshipped!
