A Study in Worship

Lesson 13

Singing With the Spirit and With the Understanding

I Corinthians 14:15b I will sing with the spirit and I will also sing with the understanding.

In our last few lessons we talked about Psalms, Hymns and spiritual songs, and last week we learned about lifting our hands to worship. We want to go back and talk some more about Spiritual Songs. But Spiritual songs of a different kind. We have all been in church and seen the people lifting their hands and singing a song in a language that you don't understand? You have been there when the worship leader has started singing a song that is not on the screen and then the musicians have picked up on it and starting playing it without music? Both of these are called worshipping in the Spirit. First we will talk about singing in a language that you don't understand.

How many of you have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the speaking in tongues? Tongues is a heavenly language that only God understands. Which is great because then we can't mess it up and the devil doesn't know what we are saying either. If we use this while we are singing, it is called worshipping in the spirit. It is the purest and best way to worship God, because you are speaking His language. So in order to do this you must be filled with the Spirit, there is no other way that you can get this language. If you have not received the Holy Spirit yet, or do not speak in tongues, that is the next step you need to take.

While we are singing in our services you know that we start with fast praise songs and then go into slower quieter worship songs. This is to lead us into the presence of God, which we have talked about before. Sometimes after one or two worship songs you may hear the leader start to say "thank you Jesus" or something like that, and then start to worship in the spirit (sing in tongues) If you have received the Holy Spirit just join in. Start to speak in tongues, but sing it instead. Let the Holy Spirit lead you into it and it will be easy. Lift your hands and sing to God. You will see how easy it is once you do it one time. It will make you feel good and will bless God too. You will find that it is not hard to block out the people around you when you truly are worshipping God. You can get lost in God and not even care what people around you are doing. It beats any kind of "High" that the world has to offer. If you are truly filled with the Spirit it will not be a hard thing to do.

I Corinthians 14: 15 talks about singing with the spirit and understanding what you are saying. If you want to understand what you are singing, than just pray to God and He will give you the understanding of what you are singing. But even if you don't understand, it is a wonderful way to praise God. You are giving thanks to Him and letting Him know how much you love Him.

In I Cor. 14 it talks all about tongues. Praying in tongues and worshipping in tongues. It also says that we can have the understanding of what we are praying or singing in tongues, all we have to is ask. Well when we are singing our songs in church we get into the worship songs, you need to lift your hands to God and just tell Him that you love him. Start to sing the words, with a tune that God gives you.

Just pretend that there is no one else around you. It's just you and God. Don't be afraid to tell Him that you love Him. He loves you so much, you don't ever have to be shy or afraid to tell Him how much He means to you. Do you like it when someone tells you that you are a nice person and that they like you? Doesn't it make you feel good inside? When children are little, as a baby or a small child they will go to sleep if their mommy sings to them or talks softly to them and tells them how much they love them. It soothes them and makes them comfortable and they just fall asleep. Well God won't fall asleep on you, but it brings great joy to Him for you to tell Him how much you love Him. You will feel like that small baby, comfortable and warm. It is a wonderful time to spend with God. You will come away feeling loved and needed.

Have you ever been doing something that you really didn't have to think much about, and you found yourself humming a tune. It could be something you heard, or it could be one that you just made up. You don't even know where it came from. You're just humming. Well that's kind of what singing in the spirit is like. Just start humming or singing to God that you love Him and that He is wonderful. It will come so easy, you'll see!

Singing in the Spirit can also be in English. You just sing out what is in your heart. It doesn’t have to be a tune you know, just harmonize. Sing with the Angels. Lift your voice to God and sing from your heart and let him know you love him. It is hard to explain, but once you are worshipping God it will come out naturally. Just make a joyful noise unto the Lord and you will be surprised how much like Angels it will sound.

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord! He is worthy of our praise. Once you start to Worship God in this way it will become an easy and natural thing to do. You will do it without thinking and will just join in and soon the whole room will sound like Angels and we will be drawn into the presence of Almighty God. And then you will experience just a little bit of what heaven is going to be like.
