I am going to go through
this Psalm verse by verse. I hope you enjoy
the teaching!
Psalms 91:1
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Webster's translation for Dwell
To live as a resident; reside. To exist in a given place or state: dwell in
joy.
NET
As for you, the one who lives in the shelter of the sovereign One, and
resides in the protective shadow of the mighty king.
We can not spend "Fleeting Moments" with God and expect that we will be
under His protective shadow. We have to live, take up residence in His
Presence. He has to become our breath and life and all that we do. It has to
be a state of being and existing. That without Him we would not live. Do you
rely on God this much?
Secret: Kept from public knowledge or from the knowledge of a certain person
or persons. Withdrawn, remote, or secluded: a secret hideaway.
something known only to a certain person or persons and purposely kept from
the knowledge of others
There are places in God that are only made known when we learn to dwell in
God's presence.
Matthew 11:25
Jesus Invites Everyone to Come
25 Then Jesus exclaimed, “Father, thank you, for you are Lord, the Supreme
Ruler over heaven and earth! And you have hidden the great revelation of
your authority from those who are proud and think they are wise and unveiled
it instead to little children.
Jesus was calling His disciples little Children. He will only reveal certain
things to those that seek His face and desire to spend that time with Him.
People that think they know everything, will find that they know very
little, especially when it comes to the things of God. Because you have to
become as a little child, with the trust that only a child has, to have the
Father reveal to you His most precious secrets.
Shadow: The definition of a shadow is a reflection of something produced by
LIGHT hitting the object or someone who follows another person around.
A definite area of shade cast upon a surface by a body intercepting the
LIGHT rays
This is such a great description of what a shadow is, and what God will do
if we dwell in Him. It doesn't talk about the darkness of the shadow but
rather what it is intercepting. We will intercept God's Light if we dwell in
Him and in His Shadow. We will walk in the light, as we abide under His
shadow.
1 John 1:5
God Is Light
5 This is the life-giving message we heard him share and it’s still ringing
in our ears. We now repeat his words to you: God is pure light. You will
never find even a trace of darkness in him.
There is no darkness in God. And we don't have to walk in darkness of this
world if we dwell in Him and abide with Him.
Psalms 91:2
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I
will trust.”
Refuge is defined as a place where you are sheltered from danger, or to the
condition of being sheltered from danger. A person or thing that gives
shelter, help, or comfort
When a person is in danger, being pursued by an enemy, they will look for a
safe place to go to be protected. The devil is our enemy and is constantly
pursuing us and trying to put us in places of peril and danger. But if God
is our refuge we don't have to fear the devil
1 Peter 5:6-9
Humility and Faith
6 If you bow low in God’s awesome presence, he will eventually exalt you as
you leave the timing in his hands. 7 Pour out all your worries and stress
upon him and leave them there, for he always tenderly cares for you. 8 Be
well balanced and always alert, because your enemy, the devil, roams around
incessantly, like a roaring lion looking for its prey to devour. 9 Take a
decisive stand against him and resist his every attack with strong, vigorous
faith. For you know that your believing brothers and sisters around the
world are experiencing the same kinds of troubles you endure.
Philippians 4:7
7 then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will guard
your heart and mind through Jesus Christ.
The definition of a fortress is a secured and strong place.
Isaiah 32:17-19 (NKJV)
17 The work of righteousness will be peace, And the effect of righteousness,
quietness and assurance forever. 18 My people will dwell in a peaceful
habitation, In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places,
19 Though hail comes down on the forest, and the city is brought low in
humiliation.
Proverbs 1:33
But the one who always listens to me will live undisturbed in a heavenly
peace. Free from fear, confident and courageous, that one will rest unafraid
and sheltered from the storms of life.”
Trust is defined as to have confidence, faith or hope in someone or
something. Firm belief or confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability,
justice, etc. of another person or thing; faith; reliance
Confident expectation, anticipation, or hope: to have trust in the future
2 Samuel 22:31
As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a
shield to all who trust in Him.
This simple verse says it all. If you can't trust God, who can you trust?
Psalm 56:11
In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Psalm 91:3
He will certainly rescue you from the snare of the hunter and from the
destructive plague.
Rescue is defined as to free, save from danger or take out of legal custody
by force.
James 4:7 So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God
cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is
tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion,
is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come
so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.
Psalm 34:17 The godly cry out and the Lord hears; he saves them from all
their troubles
John 16:33 33 And everything I’ve taught you is so that the peace which is
in me will be in you and will give you great confidence as you rest in me.
For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but
you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world!”
The devil is always after you, trying to destroy you and trap you. He will
use anything he can to draw you away from God. But if we submit to God as
James says, we will have the power to resist the Devil, no matter what he
throws at us. We need to resist him in every area of our lives where he
tries to snare and trap us into believing what we see and not what we
believe.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
17 We view our slight, short-lived troubles in the light of eternity. We see
our difficulties as the substance that produces for us an eternal, weighty
glory far beyond all comparison, 18 because we don’t focus our attention on
what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but the
unseen realm is eternal.
Psalm 91:4 (NET)
4 He will shelter you with his wings;
you will find safety under his wings.
His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall.
Matthew 23:37b
So many times I have longed to gather a wayward people, as a hen gathers her
chicks under her wings—but you were too stubborn to let me.
The following is a part of an article I found on-line
We have observed in our free-range chickens, not all chicks run to their
mothers in time of danger. Some are either paralyzed in panic or try to find
a way to save themselves; they get devoured. The mother hen cannot run
around gathering them individually. They have to come to her.
God offers us protection in times of trouble, but we have to come to Him. We
can't save ourselves. We will fail every time. But God Never Fails! His love
for us is everlasting. But He can only do for us, what we let Him do. If
this were not true, then He did not give us free will. We choose whether or
not we are going to let God save us. And then we choose just how much we
will let Him do in our lives.
Deuteronomy 30:19
Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set
life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so
that you and your descendants may live!
Faithfulness is defined as the quality of being loyal and reliable.
keeping faith; maintaining allegiance; constant; loyal: faithful friends
marked by or showing a strong sense of duty or responsibility;
conscientious: faithful attendance
Psalm 13:5
But I trust in your faithfulness. May I rejoice because of your deliverance!
Hebrews 13:5b
For he has said, “I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.”
God's faithfulness to us is a mystery. What did we do to deserve such
faithfulness. Nothing...it's what Jesus did for us that makes God Faithful
to us. When we choose Jesus, we get everything that God has for us, but we
have to follow His Word and instructions, to see it come to pass in our
lives.
Psalm 91:5 (NET)
You need not fear the terrors of the night, the arrow that flies by day,
Terror: Intense, overpowering fear.
Fear: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness
of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension
For some people find nights to be a time of great fear. They have bad dreams
and can't sleep for fear. They also walk in fear every day that something
bad is going to happen to them. But God promises us perfect peace if we will
focus on Him and dwell in the Secret Place.
If you are plagued by fears, either at night or by day...here are two
scriptures that you need to read and quote, so when darkness and fear comes,
you will know what the Word says and stand on that.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he
trusts in You.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of
sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.
Romans 15:33
Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Psalm 91:6 (NET)
6 the plague that comes in the darkness, or the disease that comes at noon.
We can't let fear come in. In particular not to let the world cause fear to
come into your heart. We are always hearing about some "New" thing that is
coming. Some food that will cause disease. A new flu on it's way. If we let
it come in, it will rule our lives and get our focus off of God's Word.
God's Word provides us protection against anything that will come against
us. Any plague or disease. We don't need to walk in fear. We need to stand
on the Word! Just read Deuteronomy 28-30. It talks about the Blessings and
the Curse. If they obeyed the Word, then God promised them blessing and not
the curse.
Deuteronomy 28:1-6
28 “If you indeed obey the Lord your God and are careful to observe all his
commandments I am giving you today, the Lord your God will elevate you above
all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come to you in
abundance if you obey the Lord your God: 3 You will be blessed in the city
and blessed in the field. 4 Your children will be blessed, as well as the
produce of your soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your
herds, and the lambs of your flocks. 5 Your basket and your mixing bowl will
be blessed. 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go
out.
This is OT Covenant...and Hebrews tells us we have a New Covenant based on
even better promises. So as a child of God He provides us with an even
better protection and it is the Name of Jesus! When you use His name every
thing has to bow to His name.
Philippians 2:9-10
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is
above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those
in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
Mark 16:17-18 (NET) (Jesus speaking)
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive
out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 they will pick up snakes
with their hands, and whatever poison they drink will not harm them; they
will place their hands on the sick and they will be well.”
Acts 28:3-5 (NET)
3 When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the
fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.
5 However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.
1 Timothy 4:4-5 (TPT)
4 We know that all creation is beautiful to God and there is nothing to be
refused if it is received with gratitude. 5 All that we eat is made sacred
by the Word of God and prayer.
When we pray over our food in our family we always, Give Thanks, Ask God to
Bless it and then we sanctify it according to the Word. Then we know it is
safe to eat...no matter where you are.
