The Goodness Of God

John 14:7-12
The Father Revealed
7 ďIf you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.Ē 8 Philip said to Him, ďLord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.Ē 9 Jesus said to him, ďHave I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ĎShow us the Fatherí? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

How long have you known Jesus? How well do you know him? How well do you know the Father? The disciples had known and followed Jesus for 3 years. They were constantly together, traveling all over the middle east. How could you not know him? Obviously...the disciples didn't get it. To see Jesus is to see the Father.

Sadly many Christians say they love Jesus, and know what he did for them. But really have no concept of who the Father is. He's not some shadowy figure in the background with a bunch of rules and a hammer if you don't obey them. He is a loving Father. He loves us so much that he sent His son to die for us, and yet people accuse him of horrible things. That he wants us sick and poor and always struggling to "Make it through" this life. Why would he go to all the trouble of sending Jesus to take our place if we didn't reap everything he died for. How many of you remember the saying that went around years ago and you still hear it once and a while..."God is Good...all the time...and all the time...God is Good. Was it just words that we mimicked because it was the "In" saying...or do we understand how good he really is. And do we understand all that implies? He is a Good God! And that is what I want to convey to you in this lesson.

Jesus continued

12 ďMost assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.15 ďIf you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

OK. so whatever Jesus did...we can do. But before we can do the greater works, we first have to do the works. And we don't have to do it alone, he left us the Comforter to help us on our journey. Even though the disciples didn't even realize it, they had been walking with the Holy Spirit as well as Jesus. The miracles were all done through the Holy Spirit. He came on Jesus when John baptised him before he started his ministry. (An example to us that we should not start ministering until we have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit) So even though physically, they could not see him, Jesus told them that he had been with them all the time. I believe that is what gave them the courage and strength to carry on the ministry after Jesus left for heaven, because they had seen what he was capable of doing. So they relied on him, just as Jesus had done...and saw mighty things happen.

Acts 10:38 You know about Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and endowed with power. Jesus traveled around doing good and healing everyone oppressed by the devil because God was with him.

Doing good...has an anointing! Why? Because God is in it! When I choose to do good, God is right there with me anointing me to be a testimony to others, that God the Father and the Holy Spirit are with me, as they were with Jesus. And were with the disciples and with anyone that is born again and Spirit filled and that is open to the Spirit working in their lives.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son
19 ďA little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.Ē

Believe in Jesus, and he will live in you and along with him, God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Everywhere you go...there is four of you walking along. You are never alone.

Ephesians 1 CEB
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
The believersí blessings
3 Bless the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing that comes from heaven. 4 God chose us in Christ to be holy and blameless in Godís presence before the creation of the world. 5 God destined us to be his adopted children through Jesus Christ because of his love. This was according to his goodwill and plan 6 and to honor his glorious grace that he has given to us freely through the Son whom he loves. 7 We have been ransomed through his Sonís blood, and we have forgiveness for our failures based on his overflowing grace, 8 which he poured over us with wisdom and understanding. 9 God revealed his hidden design to us, which is according to his goodwill and the plan that he intended to accomplish through his Son. 10 This is what God planned for the climax of all times: to bring all things together in Christ, the things in heaven along with the things on earth. 11 We have also received an inheritance in Christ. We were destined by the plan of God, who accomplishes everything according to his design. 12 We are called to be an honor to Godís glory because we were the first to hope in Christ. 13 You too heard the word of truth in Christ, which is the good news of your salvation. You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit because you believed in Christ. 14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment on our inheritance, which is applied toward our redemption as Godís own people, resulting in the honor of Godís glory.

WOW! The gospel in a nutshell. And then he prays for them to have the wisdom to understand it all.

Paulís prayer for the Ephesians
15 Since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all Godís people, this is the reason that 16 I donít stop giving thanks to God for you when I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation that makes God known to you.

Only through wisdom and revelation, will God be known to you.

Proverbs 4:5-8
5 Get wisdom; get understanding. Donít forget and donít turn away from my words. 6 Donít abandon her, and she will guard you. Love her, and she will protect you.7 The beginning of wisdom: Get wisdom! Get understanding before anything else. 8 Highly esteem her, and she will exalt you. She will honor you if you embrace her. (read all of Proverbs 4)

Eph. 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart will have enough light to see what is the hope of Godís call, what is the richness of Godís glorious inheritance among believers, 19 and what is the overwhelming greatness of Godís power that is working among us believers. This power is conferred by the energy of Godís powerful strength. 20 Godís power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at Godís right side in the heavens, 21 far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future. 22 God put everything under Christís feet and made him head of everything in the church, 23 which is his body. His body, the church, is the fullness of Christ, who fills everything in every way.

Ephesians 2:5-7
Common English Bible
4-5 However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by Godís grace! 6 And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus. 7 God did this to show future generations the greatness of his grace by the goodness that God has shown us in Christ Jesus.

Such powerful prayers! And we should be praying them daily for our loved ones and those we meet and witness to...and for ourselves. Everything that God did for Jesus, he has done for us. In His eyes, you are already sitting with Jesus in Heaven, because we are His body, because we accepted him.

Hebrews 7:24-26
New King James Version
24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;

Jesus is always praying for us. He is our High Priest! He is a faithful high priest that never gives up on us, no matter what we have happening in our lives, he is our strength and hope for better things ahead.

The Lord, the Psalmistís Shepherd.
A Psalm of David. (Amplified Bible)
23 The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want. 2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. 3 He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His nameís sake. 4 Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord.

Here are some scriptures about the Goodness of God.

Lamentations 3
22 Through the Lordís mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 ďThe Lord is my portion,Ē says my soul, ďTherefore I hope in Him!Ē 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. 26 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Psalm 31:19
Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You In the presence of the sons of men!

Psalm 27:13
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living.

Psalm 107:7-9
New King James Version
7 And He led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city for a dwelling place. 8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 9 For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.

The Lordís Goodness to the Faithful
A Psalm of David.
138 I will praise You with my whole heart; Before the gods I will sing praises to You. 2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name. 3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul. 4 All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord, When they hear the words of Your mouth. 5 Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, For great is the glory of the Lord. 6 Though the Lord is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. 8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

True Worship

2 Chronicles 5:12-14
King James Version
12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets. 13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord; 14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.

This is how our church services should be. So filled with praise and worship for God that His presence fills the room!

So why is it so important to understand how good God is? So we can be a witness of it to the world. Over the centuries God has been pictured as the bad guy...and sadly by christians themselves. They don't call him bad, but they blame all the bad that happens, on him, so it's the same thing. That he wants us to be sick and run down etc.

It is time for the church to start to proclaim the goodness of God and preach the truth of the gospel so that the world will see His goodness through us. No one wants a sickly, woe is me christianity. They need love and life and all that God has and is. Especially in times like we are going through right now. People need hope! They need answers. The world is offering darkness, anger, sorrow and death. We need to be a light in that darkness.

Roman 2:3-4
3 If you judge those who do these kinds of things while you do the same things yourself, think about this: Do you believe that you will escape Godís judgment? 4 Or do you have contempt for the riches of Godís generosity, tolerance, and patience? Donít you realize that Godís kindness is supposed to lead you to change your heart and life?

When I found this scripture, God showed me that this was the whole point of what he was trying to teach me with this lesson. His goodness is to lead us to repentance, and make us change our hearts towards Him and towards life. If we have an attitude like God we will affect everyone and everything that we touch.

Acts 4:12-14 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.Ē 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

I want people to know...that I have been with Jesus, don't you?

During this year of 2020, I have seen all kinds of things posted and talked about that brings despair and fear. And christians jumping right in there with it and adding to the darkness. We need to stop this. We need to be sharing hope and the goodness of God, inspite of all of what is going on around us. So how do we show the goodness of God? By being like Jesus.

Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

Walk in the Fruits of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against things like this.

Ephesians 2:4-5
King James Version
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

2 Thess 1:11-12
11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I want to be counted worthy of this calling. I want to show God's Goodness to others, and lead them out of darkness into the Light!

Psalm 145
A Song of Godís Majesty and Love
A Praise of David.
I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. ...

Read Goodness of God lyrics

Every day I want to thank God for his goodness to me. I hear this song in my spirit every day when I wake up. I can't listen to it without weeping. I want it so deep in my spirit that it is the first thing I do when I get up is praise Him and thank Him and the last thing before I go to bed.

Become aware of God's goodness in your life, meditate on it, be blessed by it, Get the anointing from it and then share it with others. It is the only way this world will be won!

These are the lyrics to the song that inspired this message.

The words touch my heart every time I listen to it because I become overwhelmed by how good God is!

"Goodness Of God"
Jenn Johnson

I love You, Lord
Oh Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah

And all my life You have been faithful, ohh
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God, yeah

'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
With my life laid down, I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me, oh-ohh
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
With my life laid down, I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it keeps running after me

And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
I'm gonna sing, I'm gonna sing
'Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
