The Gospel
According To JohnLesson One
Overview
In the book of John, Jesus Christ is revealed in his Deity as the
Son of God.
Different then Luke that presented him in his humanity. John
wanted people to see him as God, to inspire them to believe and have faith in God. The
book revolves around miracles and the "I Am" statements of Christ.
He wanted to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was
who he said he was, the Son of God.
John was one of the "Sons of Thunder", as Jesus
called him and his brother James. He is mentioned in several other places in the New
Testament and also wrote the Epistles of John and the book of Revelation. He became
known as the "Apostle of Love"
The book of John presents a powerful case for the deity of
Christ.
In John 9:11 "A Man called Jesus" is also "Christ, the Son of
the living God"
John 6:69. His deity is seen in the seven "I Am’s"
I am the light of the world
I am the door
I am the bread of life
I am the light of the world
I am the resurrection and the life
I am the way, the truth and the life
I am the true vine
All point to his divine character. For in the Old Testament, God
referred to himself as "I AM" or Yahweh. John also states "The Word
was God, and the word became flesh"
There are five distinct areas of focus in the book of John
The incarnation of the Son of God John 1:1-18
Gives the background and history of Jesus. The nature of Jesus,
introduces His forerunner, shows his mission, and shows the rejection and acceptance He
will receive in his ministry
The presentation of the Son of God John 1:19 - 4:54
He is introduced by John the Baptist.
Seven miracles are selected out of the many miracles that Jesus
did.
1. Water into wine
2. Healing the Nobleman’s son
3. Healing the paralytic
4. Feeding the multitude
5. Walking on the water
6. Sight to the blind man
7. Raising of Lazarus
Opposition to the Son of God John 5:1 - 12:50
John brings out the belief and disbelief after the performance of
each miracle
Preparation of the disciples John 13:1 - 17:26
All this instruction took place in a few hours. John captures the
Lord’s words of comfort and assurance to a group of fearful and confused followers.
He knows that in less then 24 hours he will be crucified and he
wants them to have the knowledge of what will be available to them after his departure.
They will be indwelled with the Triune Godhead. The theme is Servanthood, the Holy
Spirit and abiding in Christ
Crucifixion and Resurrection of the Son of God John 18:1
- 12:25
John records Jesus prayer on behalf of his disciples and to all
that believe in His words. Then he reveals the arrest, trial and crucifixion and
resurrection and post resurrection of Christ
He shows John the Baptists words fulfilled when he said
"Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the
world"
The Resurrection is the ultimate sign that points to Jesus as the
Son of God
