Fruits of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

Lesson 7

The Fruit of Faithfulness

I Corinthians 4:2

Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

Making Faithfulness a living reality in one's life. Without Faith in God we would not have this fruit.  To be faithful to others, we first must have Faith in God that He will do what He says.  He has showed us what faithfulness is by honouring His word when we have faith in Him.  This teaches us trust and we will be faithful with our word to Him and to others.

You must sew the seeds of faithfulness to reap the results. Jesus is our Faithful High Priest.

Faithfulness - consistency in the profession of God's Word
- trustworthy or believing
- to rely on by inward certainty, to agree, assure, believe

Webster's - Faithfulness - believing, strong or firm in one's faith, firmly adhering to ones duty, true, fidelity, loyal, true to allegiance, constant in the performance of duty or services, servant, true to one's word.

In order to be a faithful person, we must first look at the Faithfulness of God.

Psalm 91:4 God will protect you with His feathers; you’ll find refuge under his wings. His faithfulness is a protective shield.
Romans 3
3 What does it matter, then, if some weren’t faithful? Their lack of faith won’t cancel God’s faithfulness, will it? 4 Absolutely not! God must be true, even if every human being is a liar
25 Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before, 26 during the time of God’s patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous.

1 Thessalonians 3:3
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.

Galatians 2:19-21
19 I died to the Law through the Law, so that I could live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the life that I now live in my body, I live by faith, indeed, by the faithfulness of God’s Son, who loved me and gave himself for me.

God is our example of Faithfulness. He is always there, he will never fail us

Finding a faithful person is a rare thing. Will you be that faithful person?  Someone that can be trusted and relied on.  Someone that will be faithful, no matter what.

Faithfulness - Definition - In consistency in the profession of God's truth.  Trustworthy or believing, to rely by inward certainty, to agree, assure, believe

1 Corinthians 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.

You must sew the seeds of faithfulness to reap the results.

Stephen was  full of Faith.  He was a deacon and a servant to Christ and the church.

Webster's defines full of faith this way

Firmly adhered to ones duty, true fidelity, loyal, true to allegiance.  Constant in performance of duty or services, servant, true to one's word.

James 2:14

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

1 Thessalonians 3:1-18
Verse 3 3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.

Works are the expression of the faith that is in your heart.

6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you;

Behaviour has to do with the things we do that people see. Don't separate the Spiritual things from the physical...people will gauge your spirituality by your physical behaviour.

8 Nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labour and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you,

We are willing to preach and teach, but are you willing to do the work that needs to be done. Like witnessing or actually doing work that you see needs to be done and no one else will do.

9 not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
12 Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.

Some are working not at all, all should be working some. In other words, you don't just pay your tithe and leave the work for everyone else. Or stand around and criticize what others are doing, when you are doing nothing at all.

14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
Know those around you, take note of the busy bodies, lip service and eye service only. And take notice of those that are doing the Word (work)

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
Blessing and Admonition
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

Spirit, soul and body. You can't separate the three, all three are involved in the work.

Paul said "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ." 1 Corinthians 11:1
Jesus was the Word in action. He was faithful. He went where people were and lived as they did.

How do we get from where we are to where we can say what Paul said? One step at a time. It's not instant. It takes time and patience and a lot of study of God's word. But it is worth waiting for. Be diligent in whatever God gives you to do. Don't be impatient, God knows what you can handle. And in the end, it will be fruit that will last.

2 Thessalonians 3:1-4

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, 2 and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.  3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.

Not all men have faith, or are faithful vs The Lord is always faithful.

Work is an expression of the faith in your heart. If you profess to be faithful and act differently when you don't think anyone is watching, you will eventually be caught.  You cannot separate your spiritual life from your physical life.  We are to be an example, whether we know that you are being watched or not.  We are willing to preach, but are we willing to do what needs to be done to show others that you are not just a lot of words with no action. If you are going to talk the talk, you must be willing to walk the walk.

Hebrews 4:9-13
9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

The Word Discovers Our Condition
11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

After the work, we enter into rest.

Matthew 25:23
23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

Be faithful in the following

  1. God`s service

  2. Declaring God`s word

  3. Bearing witness to His Truth

  4. Keep secrets

  5. Helping others

  6. Doing work

  7. Offices of trust

  8. Conveying messages

  9. The small things

All of this is illustrated in the lives of men like

James 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.

Genesis 39:22-23  And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.

2 Samuel 22:20-25  20 He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.
21 “The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 For all His judgments were before me;
And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 I was also blameless before Him,
And I kept myself from my iniquity.
25 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according
to my righteousness,
According to my cleanness in His eyes

Hebrews 3:2  Who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.

And many more men and women throughout the Bible

Ephesians 1:1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 1:2  2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Revelation 17:14  These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

You won’t have to convince people that you are faithful or have faith, they will see it, and God will honour it. Faithfulness is showing people that your word is your bond.  The same as God's Word is His Bond.

A Faithful person is someone that can be relied on.  Someone that speaks the truth, and follows through, no matter what it takes. That you can count on them to be there for you, even if no one else is.

Remember: We must believe that God is, and that He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek him!

This is the end of my teaching on the Fruits of the Spirit. I hope they have helped you and that you will allow God to develop them in your life.  Not just for your sake, but for those around you, that they too may grow and become the person that God has destined them to be.
